Q&A – How did Georgia become the “Peach State” before pesticides?
Question:
How did Georgia ever become the "Peach State" before the development of toxic and costly pesticides??
Answer:
Georgia became the peach state after the civil war. Farmers were looking for an alternative to cotton. Some monks were growing peaches on one of the barrier islands, so they brought them over to the mainland. The farmers were very successful at growing the peaches. The first brown rot was discovered in the late 1700’s. Back then farmers used sulfur as a fungicide. Farmers still use wettable sulfur today. In the late 1800s a typical orchard was not as big as it is now. With larger orchards came more disease pressure. Also, the diseases evolved and became more difficult to control.
