Orienpet Lilies: A Stunning Perennial for Summer Gardens
Orienpet lilies are impressive hybrid lilies that were created by crossing Oriental lilies with trumpet lilies, combining the best qualities of both. They are known for their excellent disease resistance, reliable perennial growth, and spectacular blooms that often measure 8 to 12 inches across, with some varieties producing even larger flowers. These sturdy plants thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring conditions on the dry side rather than consistently wet. Hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 9, Orienpet lilies return year after year, making them a dependable addition to gardens across much of the United States.
Each Orienpet lily blooms for about two weeks during its flowering season, producing one annual display before focusing on storing energy for the following year. By planting several different lily varieties with staggered bloom times, gardeners can enjoy colorful flowers throughout much of the summer. Their large, eye-catching blooms also make good cut flowers, but it's best to remove only a single flower stem rather than cutting the entire flowering stalk. Leaving the remaining buds on the plant allows them to continue opening, extending the bloom period and maximizing the plant's seasonal display.
