Salvia ‘Amistad’: A Long-Blooming Perennial Favorite for Hummingbirds and Pollinators
Salvia ‘Amistad’ is a striking perennial for the home garden, reaching about four feet tall and producing flowers in an uncommon shade of deep blue. True blue flowers can be difficult to find in the garden, making this salvia especially distinctive. It is also a remarkably long-blooming plant, producing flowers throughout the summer. As older flower spikes begin to fade, new growth develops behind them to keep the plant in bloom.
The tubular shape of the flowers makes Salvia ‘Amistad’ particularly attractive to hummingbirds, while bees and other beneficial insects also visit the blooms. It performs best in full sun, although it will tolerate part sun with reduced flowering. Once established, it is heat- and drought-tolerant and can grow in heavier soils, provided the site is not consistently wet. With few notable insect or disease problems and dependable perennial growth, Salvia ‘Amistad’ is a solid performer that can return year after year.
