How can I improve my terrible dirt that will grow nothing?

In this situation you need to add lots of organic matter to the existing soil. This will add nutrients and increase the ability of the soil to hold those nutrients and water. You may also need to adjust the soil pH. If you think this is too much work, you can also grow in raised beds with soil you can control.
