Q&A - What herbicides do you recommend around fruit trees?

Question:
What herbicides do you recommend around fruit trees?

Answer:
Retired Extension Agent Mike Dennison explains that it is important to keep the ground under the fruit trees free of weeds to allow the trees to grow without competition. Homeowners can use Post (Sethoxydim) for grass control. For broadleaf control you can use RoundUp (Glyphosate) but you must be careful as fruit trees are extremely sensitive to glyphosate and can do strange things if exposed. You can use some of the Weed-B-Gone products, but you must read the label because those products will kill the tree if used incorrectly. With any herbicide, you must make sure it is labeled for use around fruit trees and follow the instructions. A non-chemical method of weed control is a hoe, just make sure you do not hoe too deep and damage the roots.
