Q&A - What is this vine that is killing my tree?
-Japanese Honeysuckle
Question:
There is a vine growing in my yard that looks like it is killing the trees. What is it? Do I need to get rid if it?
Answer:
This vine is Japanese honeysuckle. It is an invasive vine that takes over and can kill other plants including trees. Shelby County Extension Director Jim Todd says that it can be very difficult to get rid of especially when it has wrapped itself around trees. To kill it cut the stem low to the ground and apply a concentrated solution containing glyphosate to the cut stump. If the plant is small enough you can try to pull it up by the roots. This may be easiest when the ground is wet after sustained rains.
