Why are sections of our Indian hawthorn dying?

Given the age of the plant (50 years) it is probably a lack of airflow in the areas that have died. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond recommends cutting out the dead sections and improving the air circulation in the plant with some light pruning.
