Q&A - Will mushrooms growing on my forsythias hurt them?
Question:
I have a big area of forsythia in my yard. This year we had lots of rain. About a week ago I noticed these honey color mushrooms at the base of a few of the plants. I scraped them off. I am worried I will lose all of the forsythia plants. Can I use some hydrogen peroxide / salt spray to stop this from spreading to the other plants? Will mushrooms growing on my forsythias hurt them?
Answer:
Every few years forsythias need to be rejuvenated by cutting them down after they finish blooming. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says the mushrooms may be forming on the old stems. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says there is a fungus called honey fungus that does get on forsythias, usually when they are injured.
