How do I keep Japanese beetles away from my roses?

Japanese Beetles can quickly devour a rose bush and make it look awful. Mary Schmidt from Lichterman Nature Center says beetle traps only attract more beetles to the area. She recommends knocking them off the plant into a dish of soapy water.
