Q&A – How do you control scales on a magnolia tree?

Question:
How do you control scales on a magnolia tree?

Answer:
There are several things you can use to control magnolia scale. Tonya Ashworth from Dixon Gallery and Gardens says you can use horticultural oils but you need to be careful of the outside temperature so you do not cause leaf burn. She also recommends using a systemic soil drench containing imidacloprid. This will kill any scales that feed on the tree. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison talks briefly about the lifecycle of magnolia scale. This information lets you target the crawlers at the right time with the horticultural oils.
