What is the most I can trim on my crape myrtles without permanently damaging them?

Crape myrtles take pruning well, but you can go too far. Certified Arborist Wes Hopper recommends removing stalks at ground level leaving the ones that make up most of the canopy. Then go and lightly prune the upper canopy.
