Refreshing Planters for Fall

As summer heat gives way to cooler weather, many container plants reach the end of their seasonal cycle. Updating planters for fall not only keeps outdoor spaces attractive but also provides fresh growth and seasonal color.

Transitioning Containers
Summer annuals may still look healthy but often become overgrown or stressed from heat. Gardeners can either prune and keep them or remove them entirely to make space for fall selections. When replanting, it is important to dig out root balls thoroughly and replenish potting soil as needed. Soil moisture crystals can help retain water in containers, though they usually last several years before requiring replacement. Inspect plants for signs of pests or fungal issues before reusing them.

Design Principles
A simple method for arranging containers is the “thriller, filler, spiller” approach. A central plant (thriller) provides height and visual impact, filler plants occupy the middle space, and trailing plants (spillers) soften edges by cascading over the sides.

Annual Options
Fall annuals offer rich seasonal colors. Celosia produces tall, plume-like blooms in red, orange, and yellow tones, while coleus contributes bold foliage. Marigolds, with their orange and yellow flowers, can serve as fillers or spillers depending on growth habit. Pansies and violas remain reliable fall choices, offering a wide range of colors and some trailing forms. Tropical crotons, with large red, yellow, and orange leaves, work well as thrillers. Sweet potato vines provide strong trailing growth for spiller roles.

Perennial Choices
Perennials extend seasonal interest and often overwinter in containers. Asters, dianthus, and rudbeckias add color and texture. Chrysanthemums and ornamental grasses serve as dramatic thrillers, while coral bells can function as either fillers or thrillers due to their colorful foliage. Creeping Jenny provides trailing growth along container edges.

Edible Ornamentals
Certain vegetables also make attractive additions. Ornamental cabbages and kales pair well with pansies, while ornamental peppers add bright yellow, orange, and red fruit. Swiss chard contributes colorful stems and can serve as either a filler or a thriller depending on its size.

Drainage and Frost Protection
Good drainage is essential. Containers must have a bottom hole to prevent standing water. Raising pots slightly off the ground or adding a layer of rocks inside the container can improve water flow. During early frosts, covering containers with a tarp that reaches the ground, or moving them into a garage or indoors, can extend plant life. Temporary protection is often sufficient when cold snaps are brief.

Seasonal Additions
Beyond plants, decorative items such as pumpkins, gourds, corn stalks, or seasonal ornaments can enhance fall displays. These elements complement plantings and highlight the festive nature of the season.
