UT Haywood County Extension Director Walter Battle talks about bean basics. There are two main kinds of garden beans: bush and pole. Bush beans grow in a more contained bush shape; pole beans run and clime as a vine. Walter also talks about lima beans. Green beans are legumes so they fix nitrogen into the soil that can be used as a nutrient to the crop to be planted next in that space. Beans can be planted from April to June and will mature in 60-80 days depending on the variety. You can read the seed envelope to see what your beans need. Green beans can produce 75 pounds of beans per 100-foot row. Beans are ready for harvest when they can be easily pulled from the vine. Walter talks about weed control around beans and how to control common insects and diseases on beans.
