Planting Summer Flowers
TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond plants summer annuals in the Family Plot flower bed. This is the sixth group of flowers Joellen has planted in this bed. Over the last three years she has taken the bed from compact soil left after construction to rich loose amended soil.
Last fall she planted dusty miller and pansies. It is getting warm and it is time to pull out the pansies, but the dusty miller will continue to grow through the summer. To replace the pansies, she is planting: Bat Face Cuphea, Angelonia ‘Big Blue’, Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’, and begonias. Because some of the winter plants are staying Joellen does not turn over the soil. She pulls out the pansies, applies a slow release fertilizer, and plants. Then she replaces the mulch that she removed from the bed.
