Q&A - Are there different kinds of straw?

Question:
On one of your shows you said straw would be good in tomato beds. I used it and now I have johnson grass and weeds from the straw. My bed was clear from weeds but now it is full of them! Are there different kinds of straw?

Answer:
When buying “straw,” make sure you buy good wheat straw. Sometimes hay is sold as straw. Hay is full of seeds and will bring lots of weeds into your garden. With wheat straw you may get a few wheat plants but the straw will be weed free. Another option for mulching the garden is to use pine needles or pine straw.
