Q&A - Can I use extra herbicide for insurance?

Question:
If 6 ounces of a said herbicide is recommended, what’s wrong with using 8 to 10 ounces for insurance sake?

Answer:
You should use the label recommended amount of herbicide. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison explains that that using more will cost you more money, cause an environmental problem because of lingering effects into the next season or longer, and you may kill desirable plants. For example spraying above the labeled rate for a  broad-leaf herbicide for weeds in a grass lawn you may kill your lawn too. The label is a legal document you are bound by law to follow.
