Q&A - How do we make our pears ripen?

Question:
We purchased a house that has a small pear tree. It bears fruit, but the pears never ripen. They remain hard and green. What can we do so our pears ripen and are edible?

Answer:
Pears ripen after they have been picked. They are picked hard. Putting several pears in a bag together or even on the counter will encourage ripening. Another option is to put the pears with bananas to speed ripening. Not all pears will be soft when ripe. The harder crunchier pears are not good for eating but can be good for cooking or canning.
