Q&A - Is weed barrier bad for plants?
Question:
I put weed barrier fabric down in my rose bed under my wood chips and it seems like my roses are not as healthy as years past. I also use weed barrier fabric in other beds that have blueberries and kiwis. Is weed barrier bad for plants?
Answer:
There are two kinds of barriers: landscape fabric and weed barrier. TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond explains that weed barrier is more dense and does not let water through as readily as landscape fabric. She uses weed barrier with her landscape shrubs where she does not want to dig again. Around her plants that need amending or frequent fertilization she uses landscape fabric, so the fertilizer and water can penetrate into the soil.
