Q&A - Should I buy hulled or un-hulled Bermuda grass seed?
Question:
When purchasing Bermuda seed, should I get the hulled or un-hulled?
Answer:
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison explains that hulled seed is seed that has had the hull removed. The natural way Bermuda grows is that the plant drops an un-hulled seed in the fall. Over the winter the seed is scarified by mother nature so in the spring it is ready to grow. The un-hulled seed from the store is surrounded by the tough covering designed to protect the seed through winter. That covering slows germination and reduces water absorption and germination. It is recommended that you plant hulled Bermuda seed in the spring.
