Q&A - Should you sucker determinate tomatoes?

Question:
This year I am growing four determinate tomato varieties in containers. I've been suckering them. Are you supposed to sucker determinate tomato varieties?

Answer:
Generally, you do not sucker determinate tomato varieties. Determinate tomatoes grow to a certain size, fruit, and stop growing. Suckering determinate tomatoes will force more top growth and reduce the density of leaves which will improve air circulation. If you sucker you will have fewer larger tomatoes. If you do not sucker you will have more smaller tomatoes.
