Q&A - Should you water trees in a drought?

Question:
How much water should you give your mature trees when there are drought-like conditions?  How would you go about doing that?

Answer:
Certified Arborist Wes Hopper says you should learn about your tree so you know what it needs. You should know how the roots grow and how it will respond to what you do to it. Different kinds of trees require different amounts of water. Trees in your yard are often growing in compacted soils. Water does not penetrate deeply into compacted soils, it just runs off. A deep-root waterer can be used to get water down into the soil where the roots are. As a general rule of thumb, trees they need one half to two inches of water every few days.
