Q&A - What is this rust spotting on the underside of my blackberry leaves?

Question:
I have a rust colored spotting on the underside of my blackberry leaves. What is it and what should I do?  I just planted 100 red raspberry plants. Are my raspberry plants in danger?

Answer:
This is orange rust. It affects blackberries but not raspberries. It is more common on the trailing varieties of blackberries. It is a fungal disease transmitted by wind born spores. UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison gives a list of fungicides and cultural practices to follow to control the problem.
