Q&A - What kind of snake is this in my garden?
Question:
I saw this snake in my garden. What kind of snake is it?
Answer:
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says that is a common garter snake. That is a good snake to have in the garden. It eats rodents and insects. He goes on to talk about venomous snakes. In the Memphis, Tennessee area there are rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. All those snakes have elliptical pupils. The other venomous snake in the United States is the coral snake which does not have elliptical pupils. The coral snake mostly lives near the coast in the south-eastern United States.
