Q&A - What kind of tree and are the nuts edible? -Hickory

Question:
What type of tree is this and are the nuts edible? Mr. D, do we need to spray?

Answer:
These are nuts from a hickory tree. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison, who is a tree nut expert, says that spraying is not necessary. They tree may have some of the same insect issues as the pecan but because the shell of the nut is so thick and hard these insects will not affect the quality of the harvest. Hickory nuts are so tough that you need a hammer to get them cracked.
