Q&A - Why do I have a lot of saplings growing in my yard?
Questions:
With all the rain this spring, every acorn that fell in my year germinated. My lawn is full of four-five inch shoots. I kept my flower beds cleaned out until I left town for a week. Now I can hardly find my bedding plants. Am I destined to live in an urban forest?
I have huge trees and hundreds of saplings in my yard. For the last two years my leaves were mulched instead of raked. What caused all the tree saplings to grow and how do I get rid of them?
Answer:
Last year was a heavy acorn year which is causing a lot of germinating acorns this year. To kill acorns growing in your yard you can use a broadleaf herbicide, pull them, or dig them up. You can mow them in the lawn and over time they will run out of energy and die. In the flowerbed it is probably best to dig them up because the broadleaf herbicide can harm desirable plants.
