Q&A - Blackberry Pruning

Question:
I planted these blackberries in September of last year. The vines have really grown. Should I let the canes grow or should I prune them back?

Answer:
Blackberries can be pruned to improve production. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says blackberries produce most of their fruit close to the base of the floricanes. Prune last years new growth (the floricanes this year) to 18-20 inches in length. You can prune erect blackberries to around 38-40 inches.
