Q&A - Can I use manure in my garden?

Question:
How do you feel about using horse manure on your garden beds?

Answer:
Fresh manure should not be used on vegetable gardens in the season they are harvested. Well composted manure is safe to use and provides great nutrition to plants. It is worth noting that the bacteria involved in most vegetable recalls is bacteria found in manure. Do not use dog, cat, or pig manure as those manures contain bacteria that is more long lived.

Mike Dennison referenced the University of Maine Extension publication Guidelines for Using Manure on Vegetable Gardens.
