Q&A - My Cherry Leaves Have Small Holes In Them
Question:
Do I need to treat my ornamental cherry tree at this point? The leaves have holes in them.
Answer:
Shot hole disease is common on the leaves of trees in the Prunus genus. If you see damage in the foliage of ornamentals in late summer or fall, it is not necessary to spray because the damage is already done. Instead, make sure you practice good sanitation by collecting fallen leaves. Bag those leaves and set them out for the trash. In the spring keep an out eye out for infection and at that point you can spray fungicides to control the infection. Shot hole disease is more common in years with a wet spring which provides a better environment for the blight to grow and spread.
If you have a fruit tree for production - not just ornamental - shot hole disease can infect the fruit which will ruin your crop. This requires a stronger approach with fungicides when the blight first appears.
