Q&A – Are all barberry plants invasive and draw ticks?

Question:
Are all barberry plants invasive and draw ticks?

Answer:
Japanese barberry plants are considered invasive, and they do harbor ticks. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond says there are native barberries. Barberries attract deer which bring ticks. Also, because barberry plants are thorny people don’t like to clean out leaf litter under them. Ticks use the litter to bread and live.
