Q&A – Are beneficial nematodes effective to control fire ants? I have them in my raspberries.

Question:
Are beneficial nematodes effective to control fire ants? I have them in my raspberries.

Answer:

Nematodes are not effective in controlling fire ants. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond and UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper suggest other ways of getting fire ants out of the raspberries without applying chemicals there. Joellen says fire ants will move if you disturb them. Then you could kill them. Chris says even though you can’t apply bait around the raspberries you could apply it in a lawn area nearby. The ants would bring it back to the mound which would create the desired effect.
