Q&A – Are there any flower bulbs that do not require winter chill?
Question:
I live in the Caribbean, an area with no real winter. Are there any types of flower bulbs that don’t require winter chill?
Answer:
Yes there are. Horticultural Expert Dr. Lelia Kelly says that most of the time in the US we think of bulbs that grow based on warm and cold temperatures. There are some bulbs that are native to the middle east whose life cycle is triggered by wet and dry. These will grow in a climate with no winter. Some wet/dry bulbs include amaryllis, paper whites, crinum lilies, and gladiolas. Dr. Kelly also talks about carrying for these bulbs.
