Q&A – Are these worms killing my junipers?
Question:
My junipers are turning brown and dying. I removed one of my junipers because it was almost completely dead and put it in the garbage can. The next day I noticed all these worms covered in dead cedar from the shrub attached to the container. Are these insect worms the reason my junipers are dying? What can I do?
Answer:
Yes, they are bagworms and they are feeding on your junipers. The best – and really only – time to control them is in May and June with BT (bacillus thuringiensis). You can spray your plants. If the plants are large you can use a hose-end sprayer to shoot the BT into trees. The worms spin a bag with pieces of leaves and twigs. Once they are in the bag the insecticide can’t reach them. Also, in the winter pick off and dispose of all the bags on the plants. These bags hold eggs for the next year.
