Q&A – Can I compost my treated lawn clippings?
Question:
I have been having a problem with brown rust fungus in my zoysia and bermuda grass. I treated it this week with a granular Azoxystrobin fungicide. I compost my grass clippings and I am wondering when I mow the next couple of times, Is okay to put treated grass clippings in my compost pile, or should I throw them away?
Answer:
Because this is a chemical fungicide with a short half-life you can compost the clippings. You need to know what was put on the lawn before you compost. There are products used in lawn pest control that would either harm your compost pile’s organisms or harm the plants you put the compost around. Research the chemical in question and see how long it lasts, if it leaches, and of it has harmful activity on other organisms.
