Q&A – Can I move my sumac to another location without killing it?

Question:
Can I move my sumac to another location without killing it?

Answer:

Probably not. Sumac root systems do not handle transplanting well. Mary Schmidt from Lichterman Nature Center says it may be possible to move, but it will likely not survive. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says as a general rule for moving plants you need a 16-24 inch soil root ball for each inch of diameter.
