Q&A – How can I stop the bugs that bored out the stem of my
squash plants?

Question:
How can I stop the bugs that bored out the stem of my squash plants?

Answer:

These are squash vine borers. Mary Schmidt from Lichterman Nature Center says the larvae of the squash vine borer burrows into the stem which cuts off nutrients to the leaves of the plant and it dies. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper talks about several ways to possibly solve the problem or to prevent the borer from getting into the plant in the first place.
