Q&A – How do I control weeds in my variegated liriope?

Question:
How can I control these weeds in my variegated liriope?  Should I wait until next spring and spread Preen?

Answer:
UT Extension Horticultural Specialist Carol Reese recommends pulling the weeds to get rid of them and then using a pre-emergent herbicide like Preen to take care of germinating seeds. There are some chemicals that can be used if you don’t want to pull the weeds. One of the weeds that can be seen in the pictures is mulberry weed. Mulberry weed is tough to get rid of. It starts producing seeds when it is very small.
