Q&A – How do I get my 4-year-old muscadine to bear fruit?
Question:
I have a four-year-old muscadine vine. It is very green and seems healthy. However, there has been no sign of bearing fruit. How can I get my muscadine to bear fruit? Also, when should I prune it?
Answer:
One of two things is likely going on here. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says it is likely this muscadine plant is a female. Female plants need a perfect flowered muscadine for pollination. He also says it may not be pruned correctly. Muscadines and grapes bear fruit on new growth that is growing out of one-year-old wood. When pruning, make sure to leave a few buds on the one-year-old runners to allow new growth where the fruit will grow.
