Q&A – How do I repot aloe? It also has a broken off leaf tip.

Question:
I recently purchased an aloe vera plant. What is the proper way to repot an aloe? Is it necessary to add perlite to my soil if I use a potting mix specifically designed for succulents? One more thing: my plant looks like someone broke off part of one of the aloe leaves and it has turned brown. Is there any way to save that or will it have to come off?

Answer:
TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond says to make sure the soil level is the same. You don’t want to have soil over the crown of the plant. Aloes are succulents and need a well-drained potting mix. Also, the question asked if a brown, broken off tip on one of the leaves should be removed. Joellen recommends leaving it. She says it looks like someone used the tip of that leaf for burn relief. By leaving it you can continue to use that leaf as needed instead of damaging a new leaf.
