Q&A – How far out from my blueberry bushes is the soil acidic?
Question:
I have a row of blueberry bushes that I feed with an acid fertilizer. How far out from the bushes will this make the soil acidic? I would like to start a vegetable garden next to them.
Answer:
Blueberries require acidic soil, but Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says the acid conditions of the soil will not extend very far beyond where the soil was made acidic. He says the acidic conditions may leach a short distance, but it stays very localized. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond has blueberry plants next to a vegetable garden at her home and she does not see any problems from it.
