Q&A – I have brown rot all over my peach tree. Will Captan save the tree?

Question:
My 10-year-old peach has brown rot all over. My peaches are about 2 inches in diameter but most seem to be in pretty good shape.(July 21) Will Captan save the peaches and the tree?

Answer:
Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says Captan could have saved at least the fruit if it was sprayed according to a spray schedule. He has seen brown rot kill peach trees from time to time, but he has never seen it not affect the fruit on an infected tree. If the tree survives the winter and you want fruit from it, you will need to spray according to a spray schedule to prevent the brown rot and the plum curculio insect.
