Q&A – I have curly top on my black-eyed peas. Will it spread to my tomatoes and peppers?

Question:
I have curly top on my black-eyed peas. Will it spread to my tomatoes and peppers?

Answer:

The disease can spread. Alainia Hagerty from tomatobaby.com says if the tomatoes get curly top, you will be able to see the leaves turn yellow and the plant slow down. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says curly top is spread by a leafhopper so you should minimize the weeds around your garden. Finally, if the infection is too bad, pull out the plant and throw it away, not in the compost pile.
