Q&A – Is there a non-invasive privet?
Question:
Japanese Privet is invasive. Is there another kind that is okay to use?
Answer:
Horticultural Expert Dr. Lelia Kelly says that most plants in the genus Ligustrum are invasive. Some are worse than others. Privets are popular because they do well, nothing will kill them, they flower, and they smell good. North Carolina extension has done some research to try to develop a variety of privet that does not set seed. They have developed the cultivar called ‘golden ticket’. It has golden yellow foliage and it flowers but has no seeds. There are other supposedly seedless cultivars that have turned out to set seed but Lelia is hopeful this one will not set seed.
