Q&A – My butterfly bush dies every winter and I have to replace it. What can I do?

Question:
My butterfly bush dies every winter and I have to replace it. What can I do?

Answer:

This is an interesting question and there is no clear answer. Natchez, Mississippi is well within the growth range of the butterfly bush. Retired MSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Lelia Kelly thinks maybe the plant is in a low spot and so it is in wet soil, which butterfly bushes don’t like. She suggests trying to grow it in a different location.
