It is important to know what kind of fern this is. Memphis Botanic Garden Horticulturalist Jill Maybry says tropical or annual ferns will die in the cold of winter and turn brown. She also recommends to check to see if the plant is root bound and if the pot is draining well so the plant is not sitting in water.
