Q&A – Should I prune my forsythias?

Question:
Should forsythias be pruned of dead branches or just tidied up and fertilized?

Answer:
Former Memphis Horticultural Society President Suzy Askew says forsythias should be pruned of dead branches every year. After the branches are removed you can decide what pruning shape you want: natural or shaped. Also prune crossing, rubbing or diseased branches. The best time to prune forsythia is after it blooms. The plant itself can stand pruning at any time, but as you get later in the year you will be removing some of next year’s flowers.
