Q&A – What are these plants? A: Elderberry

Question:
What are these plants that have come up in my backyard?  Is it something I can keep? I have seen them all over the landscape here in Memphis. - Paula, Memphis

Answer:
These are elderberry. They are very prolific this year in the Memphis, TN area. UT Extension Horticulture Specialist Carol Reese says she has seen them growing well on roadsides and she thinks they may have developed a herbicide resistance. Elderberry blooms have clumps of many closely spaces flowers. The fruit is eaten by wildlife and can by eaten by humans. It is often made into jellys or used for medicinal purposes.
