Q&A – What are these tree growths and will they harm the
maple next to it?

Question:
What are these tree growths and will they harm the maple next to it?

Answer:

This is black knot, a disease of trees in the prunus genus (plums and cherries). The tree can tolerate the damage of black knot. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says you can prune out the diseased branches and dispose of them in the trash. You can also look for cultivars that are resistant to black knot. As for the maple tree, because it is not in the prunus genus it will not be affected.
