Q&A – What can I use to prevent and kill crabgrass in my backyard?

Question:
What can I use to prevent and kill crabgrass in my backyard?

Answer:

Crabgrass will grow in areas where the grass is thin. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond recommends using pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides. UT Extension Agent Chris Cooper says crabgrass seeds require sunlight to germinate. If you have a dense stand of grass they won’t grow. For long term control focus on helping your lawn grow better.
