My old magnolia tree loses a lot of leaves in the spring and has very few flowers during the summer. What does this very old tree need?

This is an old tree. TSU Extension Agent Joellen Dimond thinks it may be having problems because it is getting more shade as trees around it have grown taller. It may also need more nutrients.
