Q&A – What flowering shrubs can I plant in my forest?
Question:
I have a small forest on my property in East Tennessee. I was hoping to plant some flowering shade plants within. It consists of mostly hardwood trees. Do you have any recommendations? I was thinking of bluebells, but I'm not sure which variety to get and when to plant them.
Answer:
There are many options for planting flowering plants in a wooded area. University of Memphis Director of Landscape Joellen Dimond recommends bluebells, mayapple or columbine. She also recommends some flowering trees: dogwood, redbud, downy serviceberry, sweetbay magnolia, red buckeye.
